Although it is true that William Penn is responsible for colonizing Pennsylvania, the first European settlement in the state was established in 1643 by the Swedes, under the leadership of Johan Printz, at Tinicum, Delaware County.

Washington's Crossing: On Christmas Eve, 1776, Gen. Washington and 2,400 infantry and artillery crossed the Delaware - all the while fighting a fierce ice and snow storm - and suprised, routed and captured four regiments of Hessian infantry. As the map shows, Washington's forces marched over multiple roads to converge on Trenton, carefully surrounding the Hessians and cutting off their retreat route to the south.
